The Story of Udaipur’s Beginnings
In the year 1559, the sun rose with a promise never to bow down, and the foundation of a new city was laid by Maharana Udai Singh Ji. The lake already existed (Pichola), and its abundant waters made the region an attractive hunting ground. Thus began the journey of Udaipur, which came to be known as the “City of Sunrise” and the third capital of Mewar, symbolizing the courage, pride, and indomitable spirit of its rulers.
From Moti Magri to Lake-Facing Palaces
Initially, Maharana Udai Singh spent his days at Moti Magri, the hill that today is famous as the Chetak Memorial. Visitors now come here to pay homage to Chetak and to the loyal heroes of Mewar. In time, however, the Maharana established his royal residence in the newly founded city of Udaipur. The beautiful lake-facing palace that you see today was commissioned by Maharana Fateh Singh Ji (Fateh Sagar), along with the royal guest house known as Laxmi Vilas Palace. As we drive along the lake, you will notice on one side a row of eateries offering sumptuous local cuisine—an ideal place to pause and enjoy a delightful break amidst the scenic beauty of Udaipur.
Old City Lanes and Rooftop Flavours
As we enter the Old City, Udaipur reveals a world where the past gracefully blends with the present. Ancient havelis have been lovingly restored into elegant restaurants, charming guest houses, and mesmerizing antique shops. The narrow lanes around Jagdish Temple invite you to discover hidden gems at every turn. From many rooftop cafés, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the city while sipping a cup of tea accompanied by a freshly prepared samosa or kachori.
And do not miss the famous kalakand at Hari Om—a humble traditional shop that still preserves a taste and legacy of nearly two hundred years. The road to the left leads to Gangaur Ghat, one of the most picturesque spots in Udaipur, now especially popular for pre-wedding photo shoots, where couples come to capture unforgettable moments against the timeless backdrop of the lake and palaces.
Bagore Ki Haveli: Living Heritage
Bagore Ki Haveli is another splendid historic mansion, built by Amar Chand Badwa, the Prime Minister of Mewar. The haveli has 138 beautifully designed rooms and today serves as a museum showcasing the rich culture of Rajasthan, including exquisite mosaic and glass work. The main attraction is the traditional folk dance performance held every evening from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, where vibrant music, dance, and colourful costumes bring the spirit of Rajasthan vividly to life.
